In the world of architectural visualization, getting a stunning exterior render usually meant hours of render times and complex settings. However, with Lumion 9, this process becomes both incredibly fast and enjoyable when you know the right workflow.

If you want to bring your modern architectural projects to life, create realistic lighting, and build atmospheres that draw the viewer into the scene, this guide is exactly for you. Based on our render workflow video published on the ShareTextures channel, we break down step-by-step how to prepare a perfect exterior render using Lumion 9.

1. Importing the Model and Environmental Placement

Every great render starts with a solid foundation. The first step of our workflow is to import the 3D model you prepared in a program like SketchUp, Revit, or 3ds Max into the Lumion 9 scene.

  • Correct Positioning: When you place the house model in the scene, make sure the structure is not "floating in the air". The building must always integrate organically with the ground.

  • Camera Angle (Focal Length): Determining your main camera angle right after placing your model prevents you from wasting time on unnecessary environmental details. Generally, for exterior shots, a focal length between 25mm and 35mm makes the architectural structure look majestic and realistic.

2. Landscape Sculpting

A flat surface is the biggest giveaway of a computer-generated 3D model. In the real world, the ground is never perfectly flat.

Using Lumion's Landscape tools, gently raise and lower the terrain around the building. Create a natural slope for pool edges, walkways, and garden borders. These slight elevation differences will allow you to achieve much more realistic shadows when the sunlight hits.

3. The Power of PBR Materials and Lumion 9 Innovations

What takes a render from looking like a "video game graphic" to "photorealism" is the quality of the textures used. You can enrich your scenes by using high-quality PBR materials from the ShareTextures library. One of the strongest aspects of Lumion 9 is its material engine:

Customizable 3D Grass

One of the most revolutionary features of Lumion 9 is the 3D grass system. Instead of a standard green ground color, activate this feature. Adjust the length and wildness of the grass according to the style of the project. You should choose short and neat settings for a well-kept modern villa garden; and long, wild settings for a natural environment.

Realistic Pool Water

Water directly affects the overall lighting of the scene with its reflection and refraction properties. After selecting the water material:

  • Decrease the wave scale.

  • Shift the color tone to a slight turquoise/blue range to give it a chlorinated water look.

  • Increase the reflectivity value to make the sky shine on the water.

Floors and Concrete

Use high-quality textures like ShareTextures concrete or stone for walkways and patio areas. Keep the roughness setting balanced to avoid a plastic look. By adding the Weathering effect to the floor material, you can add a natural dirt/moss appearance to the corners and edges.

4. Bringing Nature into the Scene: Trees and Plants

What gives a sense of scale in exterior renders are the plants. When adding trees from the Lumion library, place them carefully one by one instead of using the "Cluster" tool.

  • Foreground: Add a few leaves or branches just in front of the camera so that they appear out of focus. This adds incredible depth to the photo by creating Depth of Field.

  • Background: Use dense tree lines to cover the horizon.

5. Lighting and "Real Skies" Technology

The biggest innovation that came with Lumion 9 is the Real Skies feature. This feature changes the entire lighting and atmosphere of the scene with a single click.

  1. Real Skies: Choose an appropriate HDRI sky for late afternoon or Golden Hour. Rotate the heading of the sun to create both bright and shadowed areas on the facade of the building.

  2. Sun Study: Balance the sun effect to match the Real Skies to prevent shadows from falling too harshly.

  3. Color Correction: Increase the contrast and add a warm, inviting tone to the scene using the Temperature slider.

Skylight and Hyperlight: Do not forget to set the Skylight setting to "Ultra" (or the highest level your project can handle) to calculate the bounced light, especially in shadowed areas.

When you follow all these steps, you will see how an ordinary 3D model transforms into a breathtaking architectural photograph with the power of Lumion 9. Working fast while choosing the right materials (like ShareTextures PBR textures) and using tools like Real Skies efficiently determines the quality of your project. Happy rendering!
