Fabric Scans
Generating textures from fabric samples is usually a fairly smooth process once the scanning stage is complete. In our case, we rely on photometric stereo to capture accurate color, normal, and height data from real fabric surfaces.
Recently, that workflow became a bit more complicated. During our studio move, part of our scanning setup was damaged, leaving us without our usual lighting rig. Without the original equipment, we had to manually adjust and reposition lights around the fabric samples. This made the capture process slower and more sensitive to errors than usual.
Despite these limitations, we were still able to produce usable scans. Some of them do not fully meet our usual quality standards, but they remain perfectly suitable for close up renders or smaller scale assets such as pillows, cushions, and ottomans. In practical use, they still hold up well where fabric detail matters most.
On the positive side, our free fabric textures library has now grown to over 300 assets. Reaching this number is a solid milestone for us, but it also highlights where the library can improve and expand.
One of the biggest gaps right now is outdoor surface materials. Fabrics are well covered, but materials like ground, asphalt, and road surfaces are still underrepresented. To address this, we are planning to take our scanning process outside and start capturing real world ground materials to broaden the collection.
As always, our goal is to provide reliable, production ready assets that artists can actually use. We hope the textures we have released so far are already helping you in your projects.
The newly created fabric textures have been added to the Early Access library. If you are an existing patron and are unsure how to access them, please take a look at our FAQ for step by step guidance.
If you are new to ShareTextures and enjoying the free resources, consider supporting us through our Patreon page. Becoming a patron helps us continue scanning, processing, and releasing new assets, while also giving you early access to upcoming content.
